Is Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Financials ETF (RSPF) a Strong ETF Right Now?

Read MoreHide Full Article

The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Financials ETF (RSPF - Free Report) was launched on 11/01/2006, and is a smart beta exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the Financials ETFs category of the market.

What Are Smart Beta ETFs?

The ETF industry has traditionally been dominated by products based on market capitalization weighted indexes that are designed to represent the market or a particular segment of the market.

Because market cap weighted indexes provide a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns, they work well for investors who believe in market efficiency.

On the other hand, some investors who believe that it is possible to beat the market by superior stock selection opt to invest in another class of funds that track non-cap weighted strategies--popularly known as smart beta.

This kind of index follows this same mindset, as it attempts to pick stocks that have better chances of risk-return performance; non-cap weighted strategies base selection on certain fundamental characteristics, or a mix of such characteristics.

Even though this space provides many choices to investors--think one of the simplest methodologies like equal-weighting and more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting--not all have been able to deliver first-rate results.

Fund Sponsor & Index

Managed by Invesco, RSPF has amassed assets over $279.37 million, making it one of the average sized ETFs in the Financials ETFs. Before fees and expenses, RSPF seeks to match the performance of the S&P 500 EQUAL WEIGHT FINANCIALS INDEX .

The S&P 500 Equal Weight Financials Index equally weights stocks in the financial sector of the S&P 500 Index.

Cost & Other Expenses

When considering an ETF's total return, expense ratios are an important factor. And, cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive cousins in the long term if all other factors remain equal.

With on par with most peer products in the space, this ETF has annual operating expenses of 0.40%.

RSPF's 12-month trailing dividend yield is 1.28%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

It is important to delve into an ETF's holdings before investing despite the many upsides to these kinds of funds like diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

For RSPF, it has heaviest allocation in the Financials sector --about 100% of the portfolio.

When you look at individual holdings, Cme Group Inc (CME) accounts for about 1.66% of the fund's total assets, followed by Cboe Global Markets Inc (CBOE) and Chubb Ltd (CB).

Its top 10 holdings account for approximately 15.37% of RSPF's total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

The ETF has lost about -2.78% and was up about 12.24% so far this year and in the past one year (as of 04/24/2026), respectively. RSPF has traded between $68.73 and $80.83 during this last 52-week period.

The ETF has a beta of 0.90 and standard deviation of 16.79% for the trailing three-year period. With about 78 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk .

Alternatives

Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Financials ETF is not a suitable option for investors seeking to outperform the Financials ETFs segment of the market. Instead, there are other ETFs in the space which investors should consider.

Vanguard Financials Index Fund ETF Shares (VFH) tracks MSCI US Investable Market Financials 25/50 Index and the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) tracks Financial Select Sector Index. Vanguard Financials Index Fund ETF Shares has $12.93 billion in assets, State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF has $51.58 billion. VFH has an expense ratio of 0.09% and XLF changes 0.08%.

Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Financials ETFs
